If the same sewer line backs up every few months, cleaning has stopped being the answer. Emergency sewer line repair begins when a camera shows a crack, a collapsed section or roots that have split a joint. Call (773) 207-0518 on our 24/7 emergency line if sewage is backing up now. A licensed plumber will explain what to do while the water level is still low.
Repair is rarely one-size. A short break calls for a small dig, a long run of rough pipe may take a liner, and corroded cast iron has its own rules.
Signs the pipe is broken, not just blocked
A blockage can be cleared. A broken pipe leaves clues that return no matter how often it is cleaned.
- Backups that return within weeks. The cable opens the line and debris catches again on the same spot.
- A sunken or soggy strip in the yard. Soil is washing into a crack or water is escaping.
- Sewer smell in the yard or crawlspace. Gas is leaking from a joint.
- Slow drains in every fixture, then sudden relief. A partial collapse is trapping and releasing waste.
- Fresh roots on every cable pull. Roots are entering through a break.
- Camera footage showing gaps, offsets or missing pipe. This is the definitive sign.
Cast iron sewer pipe: what age does to it
About 64.7% of Blue Island housing was built before 1970 (CMAP, 2020 to 2024 survey data), and city code lists cast iron as an accepted house sewer material. Cast iron lasts for decades, but it rusts from the inside, forms rough bumps called tubercles, and eventually thins or cracks.
A scaled cast iron line catches grease and paper, so it clogs more as it ages. A heavy hammer test, camera footage and sometimes a cutaway section tell us how much wall is left. Pipe that is still thick can be descaled and kept. Pipe that crumbles needs replacing or lining.
Digging to replace a house sewer starts with a JULIE 811 ticket filed by the excavator. JULIE asks for at least two business days of notice and hand digging within 18 inches of marked lines. Blue Island code section 150.052 also requires the plumbing inspector to be called before pipe is covered.
Same line, same backup?
Call (773) 207-0518 and ask about a camera look. Seeing the pipe is the fastest way to stop paying for repeat cleanings.
Repair options side by side
Each method has real trade-offs. We explain them with the footage in hand.
| Method | Best when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Spot repair (small dig) | One short break or offset joint | Fixes only that spot, and the yard is opened |
| Full replacement (trench) | Collapsed or bellied pipe over a long run | Most disruption, but brand new pipe and slope |
| Trenchless pipe lining | Cracks and root entry in pipe that still holds its shape | Cannot fix a collapse or a bad sag |
| Pipe bursting | A long run where pulling in new pipe beats trenching | Needs entry pits and a clear path |
| Descale and monitor | Thick cast iron with surface rust | Buys time, not a permanent fix |
Pipe lining, explained plainly
Lining builds a new pipe inside the old one. A felt tube soaked in epoxy resin is pulled or inverted into the cleaned line, inflated against the walls and left to harden. The result is a smooth, joint-free pipe that seals cracks and shuts out roots.
It has limits. The line has to be cleaned and camera-checked first, the new pipe is a little narrower, and side connections must be cut open afterward. A pipe that has collapsed or sags and holds water cannot be lined.
Callers often ask about epoxy lining under a basement slab. It can work through a cleanout, but only if the camera shows the pipe is sound enough, and we will say so honestly.
How a dig repair runs, from call to backfill
Excavation has rules, and a licensed plumber follows them.
Camera and locate
We map where the pipe breaks and how deep it sits, and mark the route at the surface.
811 and permit
Illinois law requires the excavator to call JULIE at 811, with at least two working days of notice. Blue Island code also calls for a plumbing permit, applied for by a licensed plumber.
Dig and replace
Utilities within 18 inches of a marked line are exposed by hand. We cut out bad pipe and set new pipe at the correct slope.
Inspect, then cover
The city plumbing inspector must be called before pipe is covered. After that we backfill and test with water.
Combined sewers and why a repair is only part of the fix
Most of Blue Island drains through a combined sewer that carries stormwater and sewage together. Three overflow points discharge into the Cal-Sag Channel, at Irving Avenue and two at Division Street. The county flood plan blames the age and capacity of the system for flooding in low spots.
A repaired house sewer fixes your pipe, not the street. If your basement fills in heavy rain even after a repair, ask us about a backwater valve or an overhead sewer, which are the options neighborhood flood groups suggest. For historic buildings near Western Avenue, ask Building Safety about review before exterior digging.
Sewage backup right now? Do this before the plumber arrives
A broken line can release sewage into the basement or the soil. Same-day appointments are available when the schedule allows, and the 24/7 emergency line answers all hours. We do not promise an arrival time.
- Stop every drain. Shut off the washer, dishwasher and showers.
- Keep out of standing water and away from wet outlets and the panel.
- Call (773) 207-0518 and describe what you see.
- If you smell gas, leave the building and call the gas utility or 911 first.
What shapes the price of a sewer repair
You get a clear price before work starts. These factors move it most.
Insurance rarely pays for wear and root damage. Sudden burst damage is the usual covered case, while gradual leaks, wear and sewer backup often need a specific endorsement, so check your policy. Want your real number? Call (773) 207-0518.
Sewer repair questions Blue Island owners ask
Yes. The 24/7 emergency line takes calls at any hour. For a collapsed or leaking sewer line we send a licensed plumber to stop the immediate problem. A larger dig is planned afterward, once the pipe is mapped.
If the camera shows pipe that is cracked but still round, lining often works. Collapsed sections, deep sags or bad offsets cannot be lined. We show you the footage and explain why.
It depends on the wall that remains. Thick pipe with surface scale can be cleaned and monitored. Pipe that flakes or cracks is better replaced or lined.
Almost certainly not. The county's hazard plan says most of the city is served by a combined sewer system that carries both household sewage and storm runoff. Septic tank pumping and drain-field work are a separate trade from sewer line repair.
If you own property on a septic tank near Blue Island, describe the setup when you call (773) 207-0518. We can tell you on the phone what part of a failing line we can fix and what needs a septic specialist.
Blue Island code requires a plumbing permit for installation and repair. A licensed plumber applies for it as your agent, and the inspector must see the work before it is covered. Call the city Building Safety office to confirm your case.
Illinois law makes the excavator call JULIE. Utilities mark buried lines, and crews hand dig within the 18 inch zone either side of a mark. It prevents hitting gas, power or water lines.
Use the Illinois Department of Public Health plumbing license verification page. Ask for the plumber's name, then search. State law makes licensing a requirement for pulling the permit.
