Riverdale sits between Harvey, Dolton and Blue Island on 3.7 square miles of very flat ground, with the Little Calumet River along its northern edge. Our dispatch base at 12601 S Western Ave in Blue Island is about 2.6 miles west-northwest of the village centre in a straight line, and the two municipalities share a border of about 0.7 mile. The 24/7 emergency line at (773) 207-0518 covers every part of it.
What happens to water here depends on which part of the village you live in. Below we go neighbourhood by neighbourhood, from the northeast side to the Metra stops, and say which problem each tends to bring.
The northeast side and the blocks north of 138th Street
The county hazard plan says areas north of 138th Street and east of School Street have flooding issues, with seepage and sewage in basements. It also says homes on the northeast side of town have experienced sewage backups, and that a sewer separation project there has prevented backups from heavy rain.
The village secured $7,393,575 in CDBG-DR funds in 2016 for northeast sewer separation and flood relief. If you live in that quadrant and still see water in the basement, a camera run on your own sewer line tells you whether the break is in your lateral or beyond it, and that decides who pays.
Four parts of Riverdale and what each tends to need
Use this as a starting point, not a verdict. A camera or a pit test is what actually settles it.
Northeast side
Sewage backups are the recurring complaint. Look at the lateral, the cleanout and any backflow device before blaming the main.
North of 138th, east of School
Seepage and basement water. A sump pump with a clear discharge line and a tested backup is the first line of defence.
Around the Metra Electric stops
Riverdale station at 137th and Illinois, Ivanhoe at 144th and Tracy. The village's median home dates to 1957, so expect older laterals.
Toward Blue Island and 60406
A small slice of the village shares the Blue Island ZIP, 60406, and borders Blue Island itself.

A flat village on combined and separate sewers
The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District lists Riverdale as part combined and part separate sewers, and as a member of the Calumet Tunnel and Reservoir Plan. That plan has 36.7 miles of tunnels and the Thornton Reservoir, which holds 4.8 billion gallons and was completed in 2015.
The Center for Neighborhood Technology measured a slope of only about 0.15% across the village. Water drains slowly on ground that flat, so a sump discharge pipe that dumps on the lawn can pool and soak back toward the house. Its guide also recommends televising and cleaning about 10% of the village's sewers each year, and a sewer inspection on your own line follows the same logic.
Midlothian adopted its own RainReady plan first, while Alsip sits only on separate sewers. Neither is a safe guide to your street.
Sewer repair choices for an older Riverdale lateral
The right fix depends on what the camera shows and how much yard or driveway sits above the pipe.
| Option | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Spot repair | One cracked or offset section | Needs a dig, and the rest of the pipe stays old |
| Pipe lining | Long runs with root entry but intact shape | Less digging, but a collapsed pipe cannot take a liner |
| Full replacement | Severe cracks, bellies or collapse | Highest cost, most disruption, longest lasting |
| Cleaning only | Roots or grease, pipe otherwise sound | Cheapest, but it may need repeating |
In Riverdale, plumbing installations require a building permit from Inspectional Services at 725 W 138th Street. The filing fee listed is $35, and contractors must register with a surety bond, insurance and proof of a state plumbing licence. Ask any plumber for proof, including us, and you can check a licence on the Illinois Department of Public Health lookup.
Homes built before 1970, and what insurers have paid
Riverdale's median home dates to 1957, 59% were built between 1940 and 1969, and nearly 15% before 1940. Older laterals from that period often have joints that roots find and shapes that settle in soft, flat soil. About half of the units are detached houses, and 3-4 unit buildings add roughly 8% more.
CNT counted 3,362 flood-related insurance claims in ZIP 60827 between 2007 and 2011, with more than $8 million paid. Sudden damage is the usual covered case, while gradual seepage, wear and sewer backup often need a specific endorsement, so check your policy and keep photographs. For basements that keep taking water, basement waterproofing is a planned fix, not an emergency one.
Riverdale's Inspectional Services says plumbing installations require a building permit. Plumbing contractors register with proof of a state licence, issued under the Illinois Plumbing License Law (225 ILCS 320). Ask your plumber for the permit before a Riverdale repair that opens walls or floors.
A sump pump repair visit in Riverdale
These calls follow a set order, whatever time of day they arrive.
Power and float
We check the outlet, breaker and float switch first, since they fail more often than motors.
Pit and check valve
We clear silt, fill the pit and watch for water falling back after each cycle.
Discharge line
We follow the pipe outside and confirm it carries water well clear of the foundation.
Backup and price
Licensed plumbers explain repair versus replacement, and you hear a clear price before work starts. Our sump pump service page covers backup types.
What to do before we arrive in Riverdale
Emergency dispatch for Riverdale is staffed around the clock. Backups here often involve sewage, so safety comes before cleanup.
Treat backup water as dirty
Keep children, pets and bare hands out of it. Wear boots if you must cross the floor.
Stop the load
No flushing, laundry or showers until the line is cleared. Every flush adds to the backup.
Switch off power to wet areas
Only from a dry spot at the panel. If you cannot reach it dry, stay upstairs and call.
Photograph, then call
Take pictures for your insurer, then call (773) 207-0518 and tell us the street, plus if you are north of 138th.
Questions from Riverdale homeowners
Yes. 60827 is the main Riverdale ZIP, covering most of the village from Halsted Street to the Metra stops, and it also takes in parts of Calumet Park and nearby Chicago. We also serve 60406, the Blue Island ZIP that reaches a small slice of Riverdale. Tell the dispatcher your cross street if you are unsure.
Yes. The 24/7 emergency line takes calls overnight, on weekends and on holidays, and licensed plumbers dispatch from Blue Island. Call (773) 207-0518, say whether sewage is backing up or the pit is overflowing, and give your cross street.
No. Beaubien Woods is a Forest Preserve in Chicago that happens to share the 60827 ZIP. Tell the dispatcher you are in the village of Riverdale so the crew goes to the right place.
It can be groundwater instead. The county plan says that area has flooding and seepage, so we check the sump pit and the walls first, then run a camera if sewage smell is present.
A camera run finds where the break sits. If it is on your lateral, we quote the repair and walk you through the permit. If it is in the village main, we give you the footage to hand to Public Works.
